Kinetic STARCHROME® is an embedded windowed security thread suitable for all denominations of paper banknotes, combining De La Rue's proven STARCHROME® colourshift platform with holographic diffractive movement effects. The result is a thread that offers both the familiar sparkle of holography and the colour-shifting characteristic that enables straightforward public identification — two distinct and simultaneous effects that together create a high barrier to counterfeiting and simulation.
The technology lineage is well-established: the underlying STARCHROME® colourshift platform has circulated on over 150 billion banknotes worldwide. Kinetic STARCHROME® extends this with holographic kinetic effects, available in four standard variants in silver or gold, and optionally incorporating PUREIMAGE™ holographic effects for additional visual complexity.
A key design advantage is series differentiation — applying a common thematic style across a denomination series while keeping each thread visually distinct reduces the risk of thread harvesting, where threads are removed from lower-value notes and reapplied to higher-value ones. Demetallisation options (Scroll™ and ClearText®) are also available for additional design and security flexibility.
Optional enhancements include UV fluorescence in multiple colours and MagForm™ magnetic machine readability, adding level 2 authentication on top of the standard level 1 public recognition features.
Technical specifications: thread width 4–6mm, window length 5–29mm, colourshift options Red/Green or Blue/Green, gold or silver holographic effects, pre-print and post-print varnish options.
