NEXUS™ is a wide-format embedded micro-optic stripe for mid to high value paper banknotes, representing a distinct category of security feature beyond conventional security threads. At 18mm wide with a full note-height window, it occupies a substantially larger surface area than any comparable embedded feature, making it highly visible and immediately engaging to the public.
The stripe is integrated into the paper at the very start of the manufacturing process, giving it the same inherent security and durability benefits as embedded security threads while adding no increase to the overall substrate thickness. Its extremely flat ream profile makes it particularly resistant to counterfeiting and simulation attempts.
Three micro-optic effects are available. Depth creates a layered three-dimensional impression where foreground and background elements respond to note movement while a customised central design appears to float anchored in the midground. Inversion causes custom designs to flip between light and dark states, with intertwined symbols and motifs switching to their negative. 3D contouring makes elements appear to catch light as the note is tilted, with curved surfaces responding dynamically to movement.
The large surface area supports high-resolution custom imagery, multiple colour and bi-colour combinations, and non-linear edge designs, giving significant design flexibility for both individual denominations and series-wide theming. Custom images can be echoed across denominations to create visual coherence across a series.
NEXUS™ is a development of De La Rue's OPTIKS™ embedded stripe, which has circulated across Europe, the Middle East, Asia Pacific, and the Caribbean.
Technical specifications: stripe width 18mm, full note-height window, available colours include Blue, Purple, Magenta, Red, Violet, Teal, Green, and Taupe. Level 1 public recognition, pre-print varnish.
