Pulsar™

Pulsar™ is a next-generation micro-optical windowed security thread for mid to high value paper banknotes, combining colour-shift and dynamic movement effects in a single premium thread. The technology is built around a series of curved micromirrors that reflect light toward the observer, producing subtle colour variations and fluid undulating movement as the note is tilted along both vertical and horizontal axes. The design concept was inspired by the interplay of light and shadow across desert sand dunes — the curved micromirror geometry was derived from studying how sunlight falls consistently across sloping surfaces to reveal alternating light and dark gradients.

The micromirrors can be configured in different arrangements to produce a range of captivating effects. Two primary effect categories are available: Ondulations (wave/ripple effects) and Dynamique (which encompasses three sub-variants — Miroir, Pop-Up, and Vague). Design is developed through a fully automated process using dedicated simulation software, with a digital studio working alongside engineers to model the final visual effects against the specific banknote design before production.

Colour is expressed as alternating paired combinations — Green/Blue, Magenta/Green, Gold/Green, and Green/Magenta — giving each denomination a distinctive and instantly recognisable appearance. The thread is fully customisable, compatible with high-durability banknote papers, and can be varnished. Optional UV fluorescence and magnetic machine readability are available for level 2 authentication.
