Overview
RAPID® is Crane Currency's second-generation micro-optic security thread, launched in 2014 as a direct evolution of the original MOTION® technology. Where MOTION established micro-optic movement as a new category in banknote security, RAPID advanced the platform with smaller lenses, faster movement, lower tilt angles, and registered visual effects — making it both easier for the public to verify and more difficult for counterfeiters to simulate. Its launch at the Banknote Conference in 2014 marked a significant expansion of Crane's micro-optic portfolio, and RAPID has since become one of the most widely deployed banknote security threads in the world.
Technology & Effects
RAPID® uses smaller lenses than MOTION®, producing faster and more responsive movement that is triggered at a lower angle of tilt — a key public authentication advantage, as the feature activates with a minimal "flick of the wrist" even in poor lighting conditions. The registered design of the visual effects means icons, numerals, or symbols move in a precisely controlled and design-integrated manner, rather than as a floating element isolated from the rest of the banknote. This registration capability allows RAPID to be incorporated into narrower thread widths — down to 2mm and 3mm — enabling deployment on lower-denomination banknotes where thread real estate is more constrained, without sacrificing visual impact or security. Like MOTION, RAPID is built entirely on proprietary materials and purpose-built production equipment that has no commercial equivalent, ensuring counterfeiters have no accessible starting point for simulation. The feature has never been successfully counterfeited.
Form Factors & Application
RAPID® is woven into the banknote paper during manufacture, appearing as a windowed security thread with rectangular apertures through which the micro-optic effect is visible. It is compatible with a wide range of paper mills and substrate types, and Crane has qualified over 20 mills globally for RAPID thread integration. The thread is highly durable, resistant to soiling and oils, and can be post-print varnished. It is available with the optional DETECT machine-readability enhancement (see RAPID® Detect entry), which adds an invisible IR-absorbing material for automated verification without altering the thread's visual appearance. The current commercial standard is RAPID® HD, which further extends the original RAPID with a broader colour palette and higher contrast definition.
Security Levels
RAPID® operates as a Level 1 (public) authentication feature. The fast, registered movement activated by a minimal tilt is immediately visible to the naked eye and requires no training or tools to verify. The proprietary production materials and processes provide robust counterfeit resistance at Level 2 and beyond. DETECT-enabled versions extend authentication to Level 2 automated systems via IR-based machine reading.
Notable Deployments
The Central Reserve Bank of Peru issued a new version of the 100 sol banknote with a 4mm RAPID security thread, upgrading from MOTION® on the previous 2011 note. Banco de México issued the 200 peso as part of a new series with RAPID® as the primary security feature, printed on Crane's ENDURANCE™ durable paper. The Bank of Ghana issued upgraded banknotes across all five denominations (1, 5, 10, 20, and 50 cedis) featuring Crane micro-optics, and the Norwegian central bank completed its new banknote series with the NOK 1,000 note issued in November 2019
