Overview
TwinColors® Patch is a banknote-exclusive optical security feature launched by Louisenthal in 2026, presented as the next generation of two-colour patch technology. It combines two complementary micro-optical effects on a single surface: a central Color MotifFlip® that switches between two motifs (typically a graphic motif and the denomination value) when the note is tilted, and a dynamic background area rendered in two contrasting colours that frames and emphasises the central effect. The feature is positioned for fast, intuitive Level 1 public authentication and is described by Louisenthal as exclusive to banknote applications.
Technology & Effects
The patch is constructed from specialised light-reflecting materials engineered to deliver two coordinated effects in a single registered area:
- Central Color MotifFlip® — a two-motif, two-colour flip effect. Slight tilt of the banknote causes the central motif to switch to the denomination (or a second customer-specified motif), with an accompanying colour change.
- Dynamic two-colour background — a contrasting colour field surrounding the central motif, designed to enhance visual clarity and accentuate the flip event.
Louisenthal markets the optical signature as "brand new" and "never seen before", which positions TwinColors® alongside, but distinct from, the existing RollingStar® Patch family (micromirror + ColourShift™) and the varifeye® ColourChange Patch (window-based front-to-back). Where RollingStar® emphasises dynamic 3D motion across a designed scene and varifeye® emphasises front-to-back window verification, TwinColors® is built around a sharp, binary motif-and-colour switch optimised for instant recognition.
Form Factors & Application
- Supplied as a patch — applied to one side of the banknote, with no requirement for an underlying window in the substrate.
- Highly flexible in shape, size, and placement; can be customised to fit national symbols, cultural elements, or contemporary design motifs.
- Designed for integration into both new banknote series and existing designs, supporting upgrade pathways without full series redesign.
- Compatible with Louisenthal's standard application processes for patch foils on cotton and hybrid substrates (consistent with the broader Louisenthal patch portfolio; specific substrate compatibility statements for TwinColors® not yet published).
Security Levels
- Level 1 (Public) — primary design intent. The dual-motif flip and contrasting two-colour background are engineered for immediate, device-free recognition by the general public, with Louisenthal emphasising "intuitive authentication" and "instantly recognizable" verification.
- Level 2 / Level 3 — not specified in current public materials. As with other Louisenthal foil patches, additional covert or machine-readable features may be available on request but are not part of the published TwinColors® specification.
Notable Deployments
No circulating banknote deployments confirmed at the time of writing. TwinColors® Patch was announced by Louisenthal in 2026 as a new product release.
