Comparing Countries

DV Cash (Cash in Circulation) · Last updated Apr 26, 2026

Comparison View

The country comparison page (/cash/compare/) lets you put multiple countries side by side on a single chart. To use it:

  1. Tick the countries you want to include from the country picker
  2. Choose your metric: value or volume
  3. Choose the type: total, notes only, or coins only
  4. Pick a base year for indexing (defaults to the earliest year shared by the selected countries)

Indexed Comparison

To make countries comparable regardless of the size of their economies or whether their data is in millions of euros versus trillions of rupiah, the comparison chart is shown as an index with the base year set to 100. Every country’s subsequent value is expressed as a multiple of its own base year — so a line at 200 means that country’s cash in circulation has doubled since the base year.

Common Year Range

The page automatically restricts the chart to the year range that is common to all selected countries, so the comparison is always like-for-like. Adding or removing a country can change the visible range.

Use Cases

  • Comparing the impact of demonetisation events across regions
  • Tracking the shift from cash to digital payments in a country versus its neighbours
  • Spotting countries where coin circulation is shrinking faster than note circulation
